Der große Überwinder
“In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.””
Johannes 16:33
The Lord is saying to all who seek to follow Him: “Nehmt Mut! Seid stark! Ich habe die Welt überwunden!” He was looking past all that lay ahead of Him and claimed the victory that would be His. He is the Great Overcomer!
The word “overcome” is where we get our word Nike, meaning victory. It appears around 28 times in 16 different forms across 24 verses in the New Testament. Christ overcame the world during His life. In His death, He bound the strong man and took his spoils (Luke 11:22). Through His resurrection, ascension, and exaltation, Christ gained the victory: “Gott hat diesen Jesus sowohl zum Herrn als auch zum Christus gemacht.” (Apostelgeschichte 2,36).
He overcame the world’s system that opposes God. He is the Great Victor! The Cross marked the defeat of the ruler of this world. Romans 3:4 speaks of a legal victory, while Romans 12:21 highlights a moral victory—one that can be reflected in our lives as believers.
Here are a few powerful cross-references:
(See also John 14:30; 16:11)
Hebrews 2:14 – “That through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil.”
The Lord Jesus has overcome sin, unbelief, death, the gates of Hades, and everything that would discourage, deflate, or oppose the gospel. He has overcome anything and everything! We do not fight for victory; we fight from His victory.
Paul reminds us in:
Römer 8:37 – “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”
