The Father\u2019s Discipline<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

You have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: \u201cMy son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord<\/span>, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; for whom the Lord<\/span> loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.\u201d
Hebrews 12:5\u20136<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/div>

This text is one that we sometimes would rather pass right over. It is often misunderstood and misapplied. But it is actually very encouraging because we are reminded of the loving hand of God the Father. These verses, and the ones that follow, deal with the subject of God\u2019s discipline. When we hear the word discipline<\/em> we equate it with punishment, but this is not what is being dealt with here at all. In fact, for the believer, the Lord Jesus Christ took our punishment upon Himself at the cross. There is nothing left for us but what is spoken of here as the loving discipline of a Father\u2019s heart toward His children.<\/p>

The word chastening<\/em> means child training, instruction, or discipline. As a father of four children, I have had to train, instruct, and even discipline my own children. I do not go to the neighbors\u2019 children to discipline them, even though they might have needed it and perhaps I would have liked to. I have the responsibility to train up my own children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Through consistent and loving discipline, my children have learned that I love them. Over the years, this has given them confidence and assurance of my love for them. So it is with the loving hand of our Father in Heaven. We may not enjoy or even appreciate the discipline or training at the moment, but later we come to be very thankful for the way He has worked in our lives. \u201cWhom the Lord<\/span> loves He chastens.\u201d Do not resist the loving hand of the Father, but be trained by it and be encouraged!<\/p>

Anchor For Today:<\/strong><\/p>

A holy Father\u2019s constant care Keeps watch, with an unwearying eye, <\/em>
To see what fruits His children bear\u200a\u2014\u200a Fruits that may suit their calling high;<\/em><\/div>

Takes ever knowledge of our state, What dims communion with His love, <\/em>
Might check our growth, or separate Our hearts from what\u2019s revealed above.<\/em><\/div>

O wondrous love! that ne\u2019er forgets The objects of its tender care; <\/em>
May chasten still, while sin besets, To warn and guard them where they are:<\/em><\/div>

Yet ne\u2019er forgets, but feeds them still With tokens of His tender love; <\/em>
Will keep till, freed from every ill, They find their rest with Him above.<\/em><\/div><\/div>
