Havia um fariseu chamado Nicodemos, um dos principais l\u00edderes dos judeus. Ele foi ter com Jesus \u00e0 noite e disse: "Rabi, sabemos que o senhor \u00e9 um mestre vindo de Deus, pois ningu\u00e9m pode realizar os sinais que o senhor realiza, a menos que Deus esteja com ele."\u201c
Jo\u00e3o 3:1-2<\/strong>
<\/em><\/p>

Nicodemos fora atra\u00eddo ao Senhor Jesus pelos sinais que O viu realizar. Ele provavelmente estava entre aqueles mencionados no final do cap\u00edtulo dois:
\u201cEstando Jesus em Jerusal\u00e9m, durante a P\u00e1scoa, muitos creram no seu nome ao verem os sinais que ele fazia. Mas Jesus n\u00e3o se entregava a eles, porque conhecia a todos e n\u00e3o precisava que ningu\u00e9m lhe desse testemunho a respeito do homem, pois ele mesmo sabia o que havia no homem\u201d (Jo\u00e3o 2:23-25).<\/p>

\u00c9-nos dito que Nicodemos era um fariseu \u2014 um dos guardi\u00f5es da Lei \u2014 mas h\u00e1 outra descri\u00e7\u00e3o que o acompanha ao longo do Evangelho de Jo\u00e3o: ele foi ter com Jesus \u00e0 noite. Este detalhe \u00e9 mencionado pelo menos tr\u00eas vezes (Jo\u00e3o 3:2; 7:50; 19:39). Por causa disso, alguns o chamaram de disc\u00edpulo secreto do Senhor. Contudo, ap\u00f3s a morte de Jesus, Nicodemos deixou de ser secreto. Ele identificou-se abertamente com aqueles que defendiam o Cristo crucificado \u2014 mas ressuscitado.<\/p>

Em nossa passagem, o Senhor Jesus lhe diz: \u201cEm verdade, em verdade te digo que, se algu\u00e9m n\u00e3o nascer de novo, n\u00e3o pode ver o reino de Deus\u201d (Jo\u00e3o 3:3). Essa afirma\u00e7\u00e3o deixou Nicodemos perplexo: \u201cComo pode um homem nascer, sendo velho? Pode, porventura, entrar segunda vez no ventre de sua m\u00e3e e nascer?\u201d (v. 4). Jesus ent\u00e3o respondeu: \u201cEm verdade, em verdade te digo que, se algu\u00e9m n\u00e3o nascer da \u00e1gua e do Esp\u00edrito, n\u00e3o pode entrar no reino de Deus. O que \u00e9 nascido da carne \u00e9 carne, e o que \u00e9 nascido do Esp\u00edrito \u00e9 esp\u00edrito. N\u00e3o te admires de eu te haver dito: \u2018\u00c9 necess\u00e1rio nascer de novo\u2019. O vento sopra onde quer; ouves a sua voz, mas n\u00e3o sabes de onde vem, nem para onde vai. Assim \u00e9 todo aquele que \u00e9 nascido do Esp\u00edrito\u201d (vv. 5-8).<\/p>

Aqui, o Senhor Jesus revela como algu\u00e9m pode \u201cnascer de novo\u201d. Esse novo nascimento vem atrav\u00e9s da \u00e1gua \u2014 que representa a Palavra de Deus (Ef\u00e9sios 5:26; 1 Pedro 1:23) \u2014 e atrav\u00e9s do Esp\u00edrito de Deus. Em seu encontro com Cristo, Nicodemos aprendeu que o novo nascimento \u00e9 inteiramente obra de Deus. N\u00e3o \u00e9 alcan\u00e7ado por meio de realiza\u00e7\u00f5es externas, mas recebido atrav\u00e9s de um nascimento vindo do alto.<\/p>
