De allerbelangrijkste vraag is dus: wat betekent het om God te vrezen? Als we aan angst denken, associ\u00ebren we het woord met terreur. Webster&#039;s Dictionary definieert angst als &quot;een gevoel van onrust en beroering veroorzaakt door de aanwezigheid of nabijheid van gevaar, kwaad, pijn, enz.&quot; Voor velen zou dit het gevoel beschrijven dat je krijgt als je een slang ziet, naar de dokter of tandarts gaat, of je in een situatie van extreem gevaar bevindt. Het is de angst voor het onbekende. Dit is toch zeker niet het gevoel waar Salomo naar verwijst?.<\/p><p>In ons moderne taalgebruik betekent het woord <em>angst<\/em>, In de context waarin Salomo het gebruikt, is het woord &#039;ontzag&#039; vervangen door eerbied, ontzag of groot respect. De schrijver van dit boek zegt dat we een diepe eerbied en respect voor de Heer moeten hebben. Letterlijk, we moeten ontzag en nederigheid voelen voor Zijn aanwezigheid. God vrezen omvat, maar is niet beperkt tot, Hem respecteren en eerbiedigen. Heilige vrees geeft God de plaats van glorie, eer, ontzag, dankzegging, lof en voorrang die Hem toekomt. Simpel gezegd, God vrezen betekent Zijn heiligheid respecteren door te haten wat Hij haat en lief te hebben wat Hij liefheeft, met een gezonde vrees om Hem te mishagen.<\/p><p>Wanneer we de Heer werkelijk vrezen, zullen we erkennen dat Hij de Schepper is en wij de schepselen. Hij is de Meester en wij zijn de dienaren. Hij is de Vader en wij zijn de kinderen. Deze houding zal zich uiten in ons respect voor God en Zijn Woord en in ons verlangen om te doen wat Hij ons in de Bijbel opdraagt.<\/p><p>We kunnen dit soort angst vergelijken met de angst die een kind voor zijn ouders heeft. Als de juiste soort angst aanwezig is, weet het kind dat zijn ouders hem kunnen straffen als hij ongehoorzaam is, maar boven die angst staat het besef dat ongehoorzaamheid de ouders pijn doet.
