Het was zijn lot om te profeteren tot een generatie die weliswaar luisterde, hem vergeleek met iemand met een aangename stem, anderen over zijn prediking vertelde, maar niets met zijn boodschap deed. Ze hoorden zijn woorden, maar brachten ze niet in praktijk.<\/p><p>Ezechi\u00ebl was niet de enige man Gods wiens preken geen gehoor vonden. Eerder had God Jesaja al gewaarschuwd dat zijn boodschap de ogen zou verblinden, de oren zou dichtstoppen en de harten zou verharden, opdat de toehoorders zich niet zouden bekeren en genezen. Deze woorden duiken later op in elk van de vier evangeli\u00ebn en nog later in Handelingen en Romeinen om Isra\u00ebls gebrekkige reactie op de bediening van onze Heer en Paulus te verklaren. Isra\u00ebl hoorde wel, maar deed niets.<\/p><p>Jakobus waarschuwt voor hetzelfde kwaad. We citeren steevast niet het hele vers. We zeggen: &quot;Maar wees doeners van het Woord, en niet alleen hoorders,&quot; en daar houden we op. Maar er is een zeer ernstige aanvullende zin: &quot;uzelf bedriegt.&quot; Dat is het ergste deel: door te horen en niet te doen, bedriegen we onszelf.<\/p><p>Onze Heer waarschuwde voortdurend tegen het horen zonder te handelen. &quot;Iedereen die deze woorden van Mij hoort en ze niet doet, zal lijken op een dwaas die zijn huis op het zand bouwde.&quot; &quot;Als je deze dingen weet, ben je gelukkig als je ze doet.&quot; &quot;Jullie zijn Mijn vrienden als jullie doen wat Ik jullie gebied.&quot; &quot;Waarom noemen jullie Mij &#039;Heer, Heer&#039; en doen jullie niet wat Ik zeg?&quot; In de Grote Opdracht wordt ons gezegd dat we eropuit moeten gaan en hen moeten leren de dingen te onderhouden die Hij geboden heeft.<\/p><p>Een van de voornaamste zonden van de heiligen is horen zonder te handelen. Het is een ernstige zonde, want &quot;wie weet wat goed is om te doen en het nalaat, die begaat zonde.&quot; In de tijd van Ezechi\u00ebl luisterden ze naar de prediker, prezen hem, vertelden anderen over hem, maar deden niets met de boodschap. Eeuwen zijn voorbijgegaan en vandaag de dag luisteren we naar predikers, nodigen we anderen uit om naar hen te luisteren en feliciteren we hen met het zeer twijfelachtige compliment: &quot;Ik heb genoten van uw preek.&quot; Maar we doen er niets mee.<\/p><p>Laten we nooit vergeten dat, hoewel we misschien niets doen met het Woord dat we horen, het Woord wel iets met ons zal doen. Dezelfde zon smelt ijs en verhardt klei, en het Woord van God maakt het menselijk hart nederig of verhardt het. Waarheid die gehoord wordt maar niet in actie wordt omgezet, is gevaarlijk.
