Against such there is no law.\u201d<br \/><strong>Galatians 5:22\u201323<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p data-start=\"221\" data-end=\"487\">There are several different words in the Old Testament that are used to describe joy. One word is <em data-start=\"319\" data-end=\"328\">simchah<\/em>, which carries the thought of brightness and shining. It is used to express the joyful songs the women sang for David after he defeated Goliath (1 Sam. 18:6).<\/p><p data-start=\"489\" data-end=\"783\">Another word used for joy is <em data-start=\"518\" data-end=\"525\">masos<\/em>, which means leaping or jumping. This reminds us of the man in Acts 3:1\u201310 who had been sitting at the Beautiful Gate, lame and unable to walk. When he was healed in the name of Jesus, his heart was filled with joy, and he was seen leaping and praising God.<\/p><p data-start=\"785\" data-end=\"1049\"><em data-start=\"785\" data-end=\"793\">Rinnah<\/em> is a third word used for joy that carries the idea of an exuberant expression of joy connected with shouting. There is yet another word for joy used in the Old Testament, <em data-start=\"965\" data-end=\"970\">gil<\/em>, which has its roots in the idea of \u201cmoving in a circle\u201d or rejoicing greatly.<\/p><p data-start=\"1051\" data-end=\"1378\">When we consider these Hebrew words together, we gain a fuller picture of what joy looks like. Joy may be expressed through quietly shining eyes or through the exuberant leaping and jumping of someone whose life has been dramatically changed. In every case, however, joy begins within the heart and is then expressed outwardly.<\/p><p data-start=\"1380\" data-end=\"1713\">The New Testament word for joy is <em data-start=\"1414\" data-end=\"1421\">chara<\/em>, which closely resembles the New Testament word for grace, <em data-start=\"1481\" data-end=\"1489\">charis<\/em>. Grace is God\u2019s undeserved favor, and if it were not for the grace of God, there would be no salvation for anyone. The more we learn to appreciate the grace of God, the more it produces within us the joy we are considering.<\/p><p data-start=\"1715\" data-end=\"1812\">As we read through the book of Acts, we discover the joy that characterized the early Christians:<\/p><p data-start=\"1814\" data-end=\"1977\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">\u201cSo continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. As a result, we read, \u201cAnd there was great joy in that city\u201d (Acts 8:8). After receiving Christ and being baptized, the Ethiopian eunuch \u201cwent on his way rejoicing\u201d (Acts 8:39).
