Hij noemt hen pelgrims, waarmee hij bedoelt dat ze er niet thuishoren, dat ze slechts op doorreis zijn, dat ze niet thuis zijn maar in een vreemd land. Hij wilde dat ze zich ervan bewust waren dat hun &#039;burgerschap in de hemel is&#039; (Fil. 3:20), en dat dit burgerschap voorop moet staan. Ze mogen dan wel burgers van het Romeinse Rijk zijn, maar in werkelijkheid zijn ze Gods pelgrims, geestelijke vreemdelingen die op zoek zijn naar een &#039;stad met fundamenten, waarvan God de bouwer en maker is&#039; (Heb. 11:10). Dit impliceert dat hun aardse burgerschap ondergeschikt is. Ze moesten zichzelf zien als tijdelijk levend in een vreemde omgeving (vgl. 1 Petr. 2:11-12).<\/p><p>Petrus zegt niet dat ze zich moeten terugtrekken uit de wereld, in een klooster, afgezonderd van de vijandige wereld waarin ze leefden. In plaats daarvan wilde hij hen beschermen met een leer die hen zou sterken en bemoedigen om de duivel te weerstaan (5:7), en &quot;bereid te zijn om aan ieder die u vraagt naar de reden van uw hoop, antwoord te geven met zachtmoedigheid en eerbied&quot; (3:15). De gelovige van vandaag zwemt voortdurend tegen de stroom van deze wereld in. Als we onze positie in deze wereld uit het oog verliezen, zullen we ontmoedigd raken.
