Ultimately, Satan is not at war with us as much as he is at war with God. When the devil lifted himself up in pride and made his five \u201cI will\u201d statements of rebellion, he did not say, \u201cI want to be like mankind.\u201d He said, \u201cI will be like the Most High\u201d (Isaiah 14:14). He desires to be like God and has been at war with Him ever since.<\/p><p data-start=\"715\" data-end=\"1089\">When Satan attacked the Lord Jesus in the wilderness and at other times throughout His life, it was not only because He lived a sinless life as the perfect Man, but because He was\u2014and is\u2014God. Satan\u2019s long war has always been against God. We are soldiers in the Lord\u2019s army, but it is the Commander-in-Chief whom Satan truly opposes. The battle is not ours; it is the Lord\u2019s.<\/p><p data-start=\"1091\" data-end=\"1952\">We can trace this truth throughout Scripture. <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Moses<\/span><\/span> encouraged the Israelites as they faced many enemies: \u201cYou must not fear them, for the Lord your God Himself fights for you\u201d (Deut. 3:22). <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Nehemiah<\/span><\/span>, when under attack, declared to those working on the wall, \u201cOur God will fight for us\u201d (Neh. 4:20). When the Assyrian king marched against <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Hezekiah<\/span><\/span>, he reminded the people, \u201cWith him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God, to help us and to fight our battles\u201d (2 Chron. 32:8). <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Joshua<\/span><\/span> repeatedly reminded Israel that it was the Lord who fought for them (Josh. 10:14; 23:3, 10).
