Hier lezen we dat hij de schapen van zijn vader hoedde in de velden. Denk even na over hoe dat geweest moet zijn \u2013 het is waarschijnlijk niet wat wij een natuurlijke oefenplaats voor een toekomstige koning zouden noemen. Maar dat was het wel degelijk. David bracht vele uren door in de velden, wakend over de schapen. Deze tijd was goed besteed, want het was in deze periode dat David de werkelijkheid van Gods aanwezigheid leerde waarderen.<\/p><p data-start=\"648\" data-end=\"988\">Stel je David voor op een kalme, donkere nacht, terwijl hij naar een hemel vol sterren kijkt. Terwijl hij de talloze lichtjes aanschouwde, verklaarde hij later: &quot;Als ik uw hemel aanschouw, het werk van uw handen, de maan en de sterren, die u hebt geplaatst, wat is de mens dan dat u aan hem denkt, en de zoon des mensen dat u voor hem zorgt?&quot; (Psalm 8:3-4).<\/p><p data-start=\"990\" data-end=\"1366\">Dit was Davids oefenterrein, waar hij werd voorbereid om Gods volk te hoeden. Het was waarschijnlijk eentonig, omdat hij vaak dezelfde dingen steeds opnieuw deed. Want hoe spannend kunnen schapen nu echt zijn? Stel je voor hoe eenzaam die nachten moeten zijn geweest. Toch leerde de eenzaamheid van dit oefenterrein hem te genieten van Gods aanwezigheid en vaak met Hem te spreken.<\/p><p data-start=\"1368\" data-end=\"1607\">Het was niet alleen een eenzame en monotone trainingsplek, maar ook een onbekende. David stond niet in de schijnwerpers; niemand zag wat hij dag in dag uit deed. Dit leerde hem trouw \u2013 aan de Heer en aan de schapen die aan zijn zorg waren toevertrouwd.<\/p><p data-start=\"1609\" data-end=\"2056\">Het was vanuit zo&#039;n oefenterrein dat David kon schrijven: &quot;De HEER is mijn herder, mij zal niets ontbreken.&quot; Hij begreep zijn eigen eigenzinnigheid als een schaap dat gemakkelijk van de Herder kon afdwalen. Hij wist dat hij Gods genade en leiding nodig had. Hij kon ook schrijven: &quot;Hij laat mij neerliggen in groene weiden, Hij leidt mij naar rustige wateren.&quot; Als jongeman werd Davids leven gekenmerkt door rust en stilte, en hij kende de vreugde van de gemeenschap met de Heer.<\/p><p data-start=\"2058\" data-end=\"2649\">David was niet volmaakt, maar zijn hart was gericht op heiligheid en hij verlangde ernaar dat dit in zijn leven zichtbaar zou zijn. We zien dit wanneer hij verklaart: &quot;Hij versterkt mijn ziel, Hij leidt mij op de rechte paden omwille van Zijn naam.&quot; Als herder liep David vele gevaren tegemoet, maar hij leerde in die vormende jaren zijn vertrouwen in de Heer te stellen. Hij leerde ook de beschermende en corrigerende hand van God te waarderen, zoals blijkt uit zijn woorden: &quot;Al ga ik door een dal van diepe duisternis, ik vrees geen kwaad, want U bent met mij; Uw stok en Uw staf, die troosten mij.&quot;\u201c<\/p><p data-start=\"2651\" data-end=\"2997\">David uitte zijn dankbaarheid voor Gods voorzienigheid toen hij schreef: &quot;U bereidt een tafel voor mij in het bijzijn van mijn vijanden; U zalft mijn hoofd met olie; mijn beker loopt over.&quot; Hij toonde ook een hart dat volledig op God gericht was toen hij verklaarde: &quot;Voorwaar, goedheid en barmhartigheid zullen mij volgen al de dagen van mijn leven, en ik zal wonen in het huis van de HEER tot in eeuwigheid.&quot;\u201c<\/p><p data-start=\"2999\" data-end=\"3283\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><strong>Ankerpunt voor vandaag:<\/strong><br \/>Waar je je vandaag ook bevindt, dat is Gods oefenterrein voor jou. De Heer vormt en kneedt je voor iets wat Hij voor je in petto heeft. Het hoeft niet per se te zijn om koning te worden, maar Hij wil je gebruiken zoals Hij David gebruikte.
