Johannes, aan de zeven gemeenten in Asia: Genade en vrede zij u van Hem die is en die was en die komen zal, en van de zeven Geesten die voor Zijn troon zijn, en van Jezus Christus, de getrouwe getuige, de eerstgeborene uit de doden en de heerser over de koningen der aarde.
Openbaring 1:4-5<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/div>

Johannes richt zich hiermee tot de zeven gemeenten in Azi\u00eb, die zich in het huidige westen van Turkije bevonden. Dit waren daadwerkelijke gemeenten die destijds bestonden, maar ze zijn ook symbolisch voor de omstandigheden die men tegenwoordig in kerken kan aantreffen. Een derde manier om naar deze zeven gemeenten te kijken, is ze te zien als de profetische geschiedenis van de kerk door de tijd heen.<\/p>

Genade en vrede benadrukken samen ook de eenheid die God in de kerk van vandaag ziet. Deze eenheid is zichtbaar in deze zeven gemeenten: hoewel het zeven afzonderlijke gemeenschappen zijn, zijn ze in Christus met elkaar verbonden.<\/p>

Deze genade en vrede komen voort uit "Hem die is en die was en die komen zal". Dit is God, de bron van alle zegeningen (Jakobus 1:17; Efezi\u00ebrs 1:3). Hij is de Eeuwig Bestaande, die altijd dezelfde is en nooit verandert (Maleachi 3:6). Deze zegeningen van genade en vrede komen ook voort uit "de zeven Geesten". We mogen nooit de indruk krijgen dat er zeven verschillende geesten zijn. Zeven is het getal van volmaaktheid, dus deze uitdrukking benadrukt de volheid van de Heilige Geest (vgl. Jesaja 11:2). Hij is de Geest van genade (Hebree\u00ebn 10:29) die vrede brengt in het leven van gelovigen (Galaten 5:22).<\/p>

Ten slotte zien we dat deze genade en vrede voortkomen uit de Heer Jezus Christus. Het lijkt erop dat Hij als laatste wordt genoemd, omdat Johannes op het punt staat de Heer Jezus te verheerlijken en dit thema door het hele boek heen zal voortzetten! Hij spreekt over Hem als de trouwe getuige, de eerstgeborene uit de doden en de heerser over de koningen der aarde.<\/p>
