Why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?\u201d<br \/><strong>1\u00a0Samuel 1:8<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/div><div class=\"LIN-Text\"><p>No one understood just how deep Hannah\u2019s bitter pain went or just how broken she felt. Her husband sought to help by reminding her just how good her situation was by saying, \u201cAm I not better to you than ten sons?\u201d Perhaps he meant well, as so many do when they try to help one who is deeply hurting. But he just did not understand the broken spirit. Eli the priest misjudged her, reminding us that even spiritual leaders may not be able to enter into our pain (v.\u00a012). Scripture states, \u201cthe spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit?\u201d (Prov. 18:14).<\/p><p>Where could Hannah turn for help? She poured out her heart to the Lord. Hannah\u2019s prayer is the very first prayer of a woman recorded in the Bible. Notice it was a silent prayer from her heart! It was not for show, nor for anyone else but the Lord! Hannah\u2019s brokenness drives her to the Lord, not away from Him. While her pain involved all of her\u2014spirit (1:5), soul (1:10, 15), and body, because she was weeping\u2014Hannah does not let her \u201cbitterness of soul\u201d make her become a \u201cbitter woman,\u201d but she cast her pain before the Lord who cared for her (1\u00a0Pet. 5:7).<\/p><p>When we hurt in bitter pain, we can go directly to the throne room of God.
