The people of Judah had lost their appreciation for God\u2019s love toward them. Moses had reminded them, <em data-start=\"304\" data-end=\"507\">\u201cYou are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth \u2026 because the Lord loves you\u201d<\/em> (Deut. 7:6\u20138). Later, Jeremiah assured them of God\u2019s enduring love: <em data-start=\"576\" data-end=\"621\">\u201cI have loved you with an everlasting love\u201d<\/em> (Jer. 31:3).<\/p><p data-start=\"636\" data-end=\"974\">God had demonstrated His love in tangible ways\u2014by choosing them over Esau\u2019s descendants, by helping them return from exile and rebuild desolate places, and by allowing them to witness His greatness displayed beyond Israel\u2019s borders (Mal. 1:2\u20135). Yet, despite all this, they still questioned Him, asking, <em data-start=\"940\" data-end=\"974\">\u201cIn what way have You loved us?\u201d<\/em><\/p><p data-start=\"976\" data-end=\"1472\">We are not so different today. Our hearts can easily grow callous to His love, and we forget that <em data-start=\"1074\" data-end=\"1191\">\u201cin this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins\u201d<\/em> (1 John 4:10). When we lose sight of His great love for us, our hearts slowly drift toward other things. This is exactly what happened to the church at Ephesus\u2014they left their first love (Rev. 2:4). Though busy with many good activities, their affection for Christ had grown cold.<\/p><p data-start=\"1474\" data-end=\"1779\">The same was true for Judah in Malachi\u2019s day. They began to look for material prosperity as proof of God\u2019s love and became blind to all He had already done for them.
