Het volk Juda was Gods liefde voor hen kwijtgeraakt. Mozes had hen eraan herinnerd, <em data-start=\"304\" data-end=\"507\">\u201cJullie zijn een heilig volk voor de Heer, jullie God; de Heer, jullie God, heeft jullie uitverkoren om een volk voor Zichzelf te zijn, een bijzondere schat boven alle volken op aarde\u2026 omdat de Heer jullie liefheeft.\u201d<\/em> (Deuteronomium 7:6-8). Later verzekerde Jeremia hen van Gods blijvende liefde: <em data-start=\"576\" data-end=\"621\">\u201cIk heb je liefgehad met een eeuwige liefde.\u201d<\/em> (Jeremia 31:3).<\/p><p data-start=\"636\" data-end=\"974\">God had Zijn liefde op tastbare manieren bewezen: door hen boven de nakomelingen van Esau te verkiezen, door hen te helpen terug te keren uit ballingschap en verlaten plaatsen te herbouwen, en door hen Zijn grootheid te laten zien die zich buiten de grenzen van Isra\u00ebl openbaarde (Maleachi 1:2-5). Toch bleven ze Hem, ondanks dit alles, in twijfel trekken en vroegen:, <em data-start=\"940\" data-end=\"974\">\u201cOp welke manier hebt U ons liefgehad?\u201d<\/em><\/p><p data-start=\"976\" data-end=\"1472\">We zijn vandaag de dag niet zo heel anders. Ons hart kan gemakkelijk ongevoelig worden voor Zijn liefde, en we vergeten dat <em data-start=\"1074\" data-end=\"1191\">\u201cHierin bestaat de liefde: niet dat wij God hebben liefgehad, maar dat Hij ons heeft liefgehad en Zijn Zoon heeft gezonden als verzoening voor onze zonden.\u201d<\/em> (1 Johannes 4:10). Wanneer we Zijn grote liefde voor ons uit het oog verliezen, dwalen onze harten langzaam af naar andere dingen. Dit is precies wat er met de gemeente in Efeze gebeurde: ze verlieten hun eerste liefde (Openbaring 2:4). Hoewel ze zich met veel goede dingen bezighielden, was hun genegenheid voor Christus bekoeld.<\/p><p data-start=\"1474\" data-end=\"1779\">Hetzelfde gold voor Juda in de tijd van Maleachi. Zij begonnen materi\u00eble welvaart te zoeken als bewijs van Gods liefde en werden blind voor alles wat Hij al voor hen had gedaan.
