\u201cEn plotseling was er bij de engel een menigte van de hemelse legermachten, die God prezen en zeiden: \u2018Eer aan God in de hoogste hemelen, en vrede op aarde, en welbehagen onder de mensen!\u2019\u201d<\/em>
Lucas 2:14<\/em>
<\/strong><\/p>

De menigte van de hemelse legermacht prees God door te zeggen:, \u201cEer aan God in de hoogste hemel, en vrede op aarde, en goede wil jegens de mensen!\u201d<\/em> Als we ons richten op het tweede deel van dat thema, leren we dat de komst van de Heer Jezus niet alleen tot eer van God was, maar ook ten goede van de mensheid. De uitdrukking \u201cVrede op aarde, goede wil jegens de mensen\u201d<\/em> zou kunnen worden opgevat als, \u201cOp aarde vrede onder hen die Hem welgevallig zijn.\u201d<\/em> Dit wil niet zeggen dat iemand God kan behagen door goede werken \u2013 de Schrift maakt duidelijk dat redding niet door werken komt (Efezi\u00ebrs 2:8-9). De vrede die de engelen verkondigden, is vrede met God, die voortvloeit uit redding.<\/p>

Romeinen 5:1 zegt het duidelijk: \u201cDaarom, omdat wij door het geloof gerechtvaardigd zijn, hebben wij vrede met God door onze Heer Jezus Christus.\u201d<\/em> Peter sprak ook over deze boodschap: \u201cHet woord dat God tot de kinderen van Isra\u00ebl zond, dat vrede predikte door Jezus Christus \u2013 Hij is Heer van alles.\u201d<\/em> (Handelingen 10:36).<\/p>

De mogelijkheid van deze vrede vloeit voort uit het hart van een liefdevolle God die \u201cgeduldig jegens ons, niet willende dat iemand verloren gaat, maar dat allen tot bekering komen\u201d<\/em> (2 Petrus 3:9). De Heer Jezus nam de tuchtiging die ons vrede bracht op Zich aan het kruis (Jesaja 53:5), waardoor het voor ons mogelijk werd om met God verzoend te worden. Deze verzoening komt tot stand door geloof in Zijn volbrachte werk. Paulus schrijft:, \u201cWant als wij, toen wij nog vijanden waren, met God verzoend zijn door de dood van zijn Zoon, hoeveel te meer zullen wij dan, nu wij verzoend zijn, gered worden door zijn leven?\u201d<\/em> (Romeinen 5:10).<\/p>

Hij legt dit verder uit in 2 Korinti\u00ebrs 5:18-19: \u201cAlles komt van God, die ons met Zichzelf heeft verzoend door Jezus Christus en ons de bediening van de verzoening heeft gegeven; namelijk dat God in Christus de wereld met Zichzelf heeft verzoend, zonder hun overtredingen aan hen toe te rekenen, en ons het woord van de verzoening heeft toevertrouwd.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

God wordt vijf keer in het Nieuwe Testament de God van de vrede genoemd (Rom. 15:33; 16:20; Fil. 4:9; 1 Thess. 5:23; Heb. 13:20). De Heer Jezus beloofde Zijn discipelen:, \u201cMijn vrede geef ik u\u201d<\/em> (Johannes 14:27). Deze vrede komt voort uit geloof: \u201cMoge de God van de hoop u vervullen met alle vreugde en vrede in het geloof, zodat u overvloedig mag zijn in hoop door de kracht van de Heilige Geest.\u201d<\/em> (Romeinen 15:13).<\/p>
