For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.\u2019\u201d<\/em><br \/><strong><em>Luke 2:10\u201311<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"347\" data-end=\"1007\">The angel appeared to the shepherds and encouraged them not to be afraid\u2014a recurring theme in the accounts surrounding the birth of the Lord Jesus (Luke 1:13, 30, 74; Matthew 1:20). The angel then said, \u201cI bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.\u201d This could be translated, <em data-start=\"683\" data-end=\"708\">\u201cI announce good news\u2026\u201d<\/em> The word <em data-start=\"718\" data-end=\"732\">glad tidings<\/em> or <em data-start=\"736\" data-end=\"744\">gospel<\/em> literally means \u201cgood news\u201d and appears about 100 times in the New Testament. It is one of Luke\u2019s favorite expressions; he uses it more than any other New Testament writer. From this word we derive the English terms <em data-start=\"961\" data-end=\"973\">evangelist<\/em>, <em data-start=\"975\" data-end=\"987\" data-is-only-node=\"\">evangelize<\/em>, and <em data-start=\"993\" data-end=\"1006\">evangelical<\/em>.<\/p><p data-start=\"1009\" data-end=\"1570\">The gospel is, broadly speaking, the message of all Scripture; more specifically, it is the good news concerning Christ and the way of salvation. The apostle Paul summarized it this way:<br data-start=\"1195\" data-end=\"1198\" \/>\u201cI declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved\u2026 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures\u2026\u201d (1 Corinthians 15:1\u20134).<\/p><p data-start=\"1572\" data-end=\"1998\">There is no one who would deny that we live in difficult times. One reporter recently said, <em data-start=\"1785\" data-end=\"1829\">\u201cWhat this world needs is some good news.\u201d<\/em> I could not agree more. This is exactly what the coming of the Lord Jesus into the world brought! This good news is centered on the Savior who was born\u2014Christ the Lord.<\/p><p data-start=\"2000\" data-end=\"2532\">The good news of the gospel is that \u201cGod so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.\u201d (John 3:16\u201317). The good news is that Christ died in our place on the cross\u2014Christ died for sinful humanity. This good news brings great joy to the heart of anyone who receives the Lord Jesus; Peter calls it <em data-start=\"2496\" data-end=\"2517\">\u201cinexpressible joy\u201d<\/em> (1 Peter 1:8).<\/p><p data-start=\"2534\" data-end=\"2698\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><strong>Ankerpunt voor vandaag:<\/strong><br \/>This time of year, focus less on your circumstances and more on Christ.
