Many of us might remember the chorus, but the entire hymn is very encouraging and challenging. It was written by Johnson Oatman Jr. in 1897 and is based on 1 Thessalonians 5:18, <em data-start=\"350\" data-end=\"433\">\u201cIn everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.\u201d<\/em> Someone once said of <em data-start=\"455\" data-end=\"477\">Count Your Blessings<\/em>, \u201cIt is like a beam of sunlight that has brightened up the dark places of the earth.\u201d Early on, it was especially popular in Great Britain, where it was said, <em data-start=\"637\" data-end=\"733\">\u201cThe men sing it, the boys whistle it, and the women rock their babies to sleep on this hymn.\u201d<\/em> During the revival in Wales, it was one of the hymns sung at every service.<\/p><p data-start=\"811\" data-end=\"1299\">The wonderful encouragement to \u201ccount your blessings\u201d is often misunderstood. It does not mean denying that you are having problems. It does not mean ignoring troubling emotions. It does not mean, \u201cCheer up and act like everything is fine.\u201d That approach does not work, nor does it lead to lasting joy and peace. The hymn actually encourages us to acknowledge openly that we are \u201ctempest-tossed\u201d or \u201cburdened with a load of care,\u201d and to bring those concerns to God in prayer.<\/p><p data-start=\"1301\" data-end=\"1727\">When we go to God with our troubles, we begin to see that we do not need to be discouraged because \u201cGod is over all.\u201d To count our blessings is to appreciate\u2014one by one\u2014that we have \u201cevery spiritual blessing in Christ\u201d (Ephesians 1:3). Genuine thanks and praise to God go hand in hand with openly unburdening ourselves before the listening ears of the \u201cFather of compassion\u201d and the \u201cGod of all comfort\u201d (2 Corinthians 1:3\u20134).<\/p><p data-start=\"1301\" data-end=\"1727\"><strong>Ankerpunt voor vandaag:<\/strong><br \/>Take time to consider the great things that God has done.
