Toen kwamen ze aan de overkant van de zee, in het land van de Gadarenen. En toen Hij uit de boot was gestapt, kwam er meteen een man met een onreine geest uit de graven naar Hem toe. Hij woonde tussen de graven en niemand kon hem vastbinden, zelfs niet met kettingen, want hij was al vaak met boeien en kettingen gebonden geweest. Hij had de kettingen losgerukt en de boeien verbrijzeld; niemand kon hem temmen.
Marcus 5:1-4<\/strong>
<\/em><\/p>

Als je Marcus 5:1-20 leest, maak je kennis met een man die een treffend voorbeeld is van hoe een leven zonder Christus eruitziet. Je zou kunnen zeggen dat deze man de toestand vertegenwoordigt van ieder mens zonder de Heer Jezus. Hij stond onder de invloed van Satan, was onrein, naakt, leefde te midden van de dood, was dakloos, leed ondraaglijk, onbeheersbaar en gevaarlijk.<\/p>

In Efezi\u00ebrs lezen we een soortgelijke beschrijving van hen die buiten Christus staan: \u201cEn Hij heeft u levend gemaakt, die dood was in uw overtredingen en zonden, waarin u eens wandelde volgens de loop van deze wereld, volgens de vorst van de macht der lucht, de geest die nu werkzaam is in de kinderen der ongehoorzaamheid, onder wie ook wij allen eens leefden in de lusten van ons vlees, de begeerten van het vlees en van de geest vervullend, en van nature kinderen der toorn waren, evenals de anderen.\u201d<\/em> (Efezi\u00ebrs 2:1-3). We waren zonder hoop en zonder God in de wereld (Efezi\u00ebrs 2:12).<\/p>

Maar deze man had een ontmoeting met Christus \u2013 en dat maakte alles. Hij werd bevrijd, genezen en een nieuwe schepping met een nieuw doel in het leven. Christus zag hem in deze vreselijke toestand, nam het initiatief en dreef de onreine geest uit (Marcus 5:8).<\/p>

Diezelfde waarheid wordt ook in Efezi\u00ebrs 2 bevestigd: \u201cMaar God, die rijk is aan barmhartigheid, heeft ons, uit liefde voor ons, toen we nog dood waren door onze overtredingen, samen met Christus levend gemaakt (door genade bent u gered), ons samen met Hem opgewekt en ons samen met Hem een plaats gegeven in de hemelse gewesten in Christus Jezus, opdat Hij in de komende eeuwen de overvloed van zijn genade zou tonen in zijn goedheid jegens ons in Christus Jezus. Want door genade bent u gered, door het geloof, en dat niet uit uzelf; het is een gave van God, niet door werken, opdat niemand zich zou beroemen. Want wij zijn zijn maaksel, geschapen in Christus Jezus tot goede werken, die God van tevoren heeft voorbereid, opdat wij daarin zouden wandelen.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

Christus heeft voor velen gedaan wat Hij voor deze man heeft gedaan. Heeft Hij het ook voor jou gedaan?
