And Jesus said to Simon, \u201cDo not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.\u201d So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.<br \/><strong data-start=\"151\" data-end=\"166\">Luke 5:9\u201311<\/strong><br \/><\/em><\/p><p data-start=\"151\" data-end=\"504\">We turn to Luke 5:1\u201311 one last time to ask one final question. Peter\u2019s encounter with Christ has led us to ask: <em data-start=\"666\" data-end=\"699\">\u201cHow do we respond to failure?\u201d<\/em> (vv. 1\u20132), <em data-start=\"711\" data-end=\"746\">\u201cHow do we respond to authority?\u201d<\/em> (vv. 3\u20135), and <em data-start=\"762\" data-end=\"795\">\u201cHow do we respond to success?\u201d <\/em>Now, as we consider the closing verses of this encounter, we ask, <em data-start=\"862\" data-end=\"903\">\u201cHow do we respond to a life of faith?\u201d<\/em><\/p><p data-start=\"905\" data-end=\"1351\">Peter and those with him were eyewitnesses to the great power of the Lord Jesus, and this caused them to be afraid. The Lord not only said, <em data-start=\"1045\" data-end=\"1066\">\u201cDo not be afraid,\u201d<\/em> calming their anxious hearts and minds, but He also gave them a new calling: <em data-start=\"1144\" data-end=\"1179\">\u201cFrom now on you will catch men.\u201d<\/em> It is interesting to note that earlier, in verses 4 and 9, the word for \u201ccatch\u201d carries the idea of catching to kill, but here it carries the idea of catching to save.<\/p><p data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1786\">Fear would have no place in the life and work to which the Lord was calling them. In the Gospel of Luke, we see this recurring theme of <em data-start=\"1489\" data-end=\"1509\">\u201cDo not be afraid\u201d<\/em> seven times (1:13, 30; 2:10; 5:10; 8:50; 12:7, 32). The Lord calls us to live by faith, not by fear: <em data-start=\"1613\" data-end=\"1771\">\u201cWithout faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.\u201d<\/em> (Hebrews 11:6)<\/p><p data-start=\"1788\" data-end=\"1947\">How do we develop this faith? The same way Peter did: <em data-start=\"1842\" data-end=\"1858\">\u201cAt Your word\u201d<\/em> (Luke 5:5). <em data-start=\"1873\" data-end=\"1932\">\u201cFaith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.\u201d<\/em> (Romans 10:17)<\/p><p data-start=\"1949\" data-end=\"2272\">To live a life of faith, we must take the Lord at His Word. Living by His Word strengthens us to be witnesses of His light in a dark and dying world. This world is full of those who live in fear from day to day. But: <em data-start=\"2168\" data-end=\"2256\">\u201cGod has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.\u201d<\/em> (2 Timothy 1:7)<\/p><p data-start=\"2274\" data-end=\"2474\">The aged apostle John also reminds us: <em data-start=\"2315\" data-end=\"2460\">\u201cThere is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.\u201d<\/em> (1 John 4:18)<\/p><p data-start=\"2274\" data-end=\"2474\"><strong>Ankerpunt voor vandaag:<\/strong><br \/>God&#8217;s Word is given to us for our encouragement and for our edification.
