God's Firm Foundation Stands<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t

But God\u2019s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: \u201cThe Lord knows those who are His,\u201d and, \u201cLet everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.\u201d<\/em>
2 Timothy 2:19<\/strong><\/p>

Paul tells us to \u201cshun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness.\u201d<\/em> He goes on in 2 Timothy 2<\/em>to give two examples of such profane and idle babblings in his day\u2014those of Hymenaeus and Philetus. Paul explains that they have \u201cstrayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

In contrast to these, we have our \u201cBut God.\u201d It could also be translated as \u201cHowever, God,\u201d \u201cYet God,\u201d or \u201cNevertheless, God.\u201d However we render this conjunction, its purpose is to contrast the unstable ways of men in the last days with the consistent and unchanging ways of God.<\/p>

The word \u201cfirm\u201d<\/em> describing the foundation speaks of the solid, steadfast, and permanently anchored work of God. This foundation may very well connect to what Paul previously spoke of as \u201cthe house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.\u201d<\/em> Here in 2 Timothy<\/em>, however, Paul describes this house not as the \u201chouse of God,\u201d but as the \u201cgreat house,\u201d<\/em> where \u201cthere are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor\u201d<\/em> (2 Tim. 2:20). No matter what the outward condition of things may be in these last days, you and I can rest in the truth that God\u2019s firm foundation stands!<\/em><\/p>

The word \u201cstands\u201d<\/em> carries the thought of continuing to stand.<\/em> This is consistent with what the Lord Jesus said to Peter when he declared, \u201cYou are the Christ, the Son of the living God.\u201d<\/em> The Lord responded in Matthew 16:17\u201318<\/em>, saying, \u201cBlessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

This foundation has a seal\u2014a mark of divine assurance. It is a seal of ownership: \u201cThe Lord knows those who are His.\u201d<\/em> It is a seal of security: \u201cIt shall stand.\u201d<\/em> And it is a seal of sanctification: \u201cLet everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.\u201d<\/em><\/p>
