When we quote this verse, we often lift it out of its context to emphasize the wonderful truth of God\u2019s amazing love toward us. But when we look back at the passage, we find another aspect of this amazing love that makes it all the more precious to us.<\/p><p data-start=\"677\" data-end=\"1141\">Our verse contrasts God\u2019s love with the kind of love mentioned in verse 7: <em data-start=\"752\" data-end=\"861\">\u201cFor scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die.\u201d<\/em> In the Greek, this verse literally reads, <em data-start=\"904\" data-end=\"958\">\u201cfor the good (man) someone would even dare to die.\u201d<\/em> The definite article \u201cthe\u201d is there in the original text. Paul is saying that if such a man truly exists\u2014someone exceptionally good\u2014perhaps someone might be willing to die for him.<\/p><p data-start=\"1143\" data-end=\"1506\">Paul has already stated earlier in Romans that <em data-start=\"1190\" data-end=\"1406\">\u201cThere is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one\u201d<\/em> (Rom. 3:10\u201312). But there was One whom Scripture refers to as <em data-start=\"1469\" data-end=\"1490\">\u201cthe Righteous One\u201d<\/em> (1 John 2:1).<\/p><p data-start=\"1508\" data-end=\"1688\">As we have already seen, man\u2019s condition is summarized as being without strength, ungodly, sinners, and enemies of God. Why would anyone lay down their life for such individuals?<\/p><p data-start=\"1690\" data-end=\"2020\">The \u201cBut God\u201d statement in our verse contrasts our feeble human love with God\u2019s infinite love. It reveals that God initiated His love toward us when we had nothing to offer Him in return. Our God is the One who is <em data-start=\"1904\" data-end=\"2006\">\u201cThe Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Ex. 34:6).<\/p><p data-start=\"2022\" data-end=\"2471\">Our verse today emphasizes the very character of our God\u2014the One who <em data-start=\"2091\" data-end=\"2262\">\u201cis not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance\u201d<\/em>(2 Pet. 3:9). Peter also tells us, <em data-start=\"2298\" data-end=\"2454\">\u201cChrist also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit\u201d<\/em> (1 Pet. 3:18). The Cross was all part of God\u2019s divine plan of love.\u00a0<\/p><p data-start=\"2473\" data-end=\"2606\"><strong>Ankerpunt voor vandaag:<\/strong><br \/>The love of God is as great as His power.
