Mozes had tegen hen gezegd: &quot;Jullie zijn een heilig volk voor de HEER, jullie God; de HEER, jullie God, heeft jullie uitverkoren om een volk voor Zichzelf te zijn, een bijzondere schat boven alle volken op aarde... omdat de HEER jullie liefheeft&quot; (Deuteronomium 7:6-8). Vervolgens zei Jeremia tegen hen: &quot;Ik heb jullie liefgehad met een eeuwige liefde&quot; (Jeremia 31:3).<\/p><p>God had zijn liefde voor hen bewezen door hen boven de nakomelingen van Esau te verkiezen, door hen te helpen terug te keren en de verlaten plaatsen te herbouwen, en door hen te laten zien hoe groot Hij was voor anderen buiten de grenzen van Isra\u00ebl (Maleachi 1:2-5). En toch vroegen ze: &quot;Op welke manier hebt U ons liefgehad?&quot;\u201c<\/p><p>Ook vandaag de dag zijn wij niet anders. Ons hart kan gemakkelijk ongevoelig worden voor Zijn liefde voor ons, en we vergeten dat &quot;hierin bestaat de liefde: niet dat wij God hebben liefgehad, maar dat Hij ons heeft liefgehad en Zijn Zoon heeft gezonden als verzoening voor onze zonden&quot; (1 Johannes 4:10). Als we Zijn grote liefde voor ons uit het oog verliezen, zullen we langzaam aangetrokken worden tot andere dingen.<\/p><p>Dit is wat er met de gemeente in Efeze gebeurde: ze verlieten hun eerste liefde (Openbaring 2:4). Er waren zoveel andere dingen binnengeslopen dat hun liefde voor Christus verdwenen was. Dit is wat er met Juda gebeurde in de tijd van Maleachi. Op zoek naar materi\u00eble zegeningen als bewijs van Gods liefde, werden ze blind voor alles wat Hij had gedaan.
