Encouraged when I look back and see just how patient He has been with me\u2014and challenged, because I know how impatient I often am!<\/p><p>But when we speak of the patience of God, what are we really talking about? Most of us have needed patience at a stoplight, in traffic, or maybe while waiting in a long line somewhere. We might be a little short on patience in those moments! However, those examples are <i>not<\/i> what we mean when we speak of <b>the patience of God<\/b>. Why not? Because God is never described as being patient about things or circumstances. Why? Because He knows all things!<\/p><p>When we talk about the patience of God, we\u2019re not primarily referring to enduring difficult circumstances, but rather to His long-suffering attitude toward people.<\/p><h2><b>Defining the Terms<\/b><\/h2><p>There are three words often used to describe the patience of God: <b>patience<\/b>, <b>long-suffering<\/b>, and <b>forbearance<\/b>.<\/p><p>According to <i>Strong\u2019s Concordance<\/i> and <i>Thayer\u2019s Greek Lexicon<\/i>, synonyms for <i>forbearance<\/i> include self-restraint, tolerance, and putting up with something. Forbearance is usually viewed as a short-term restraint or act of tolerance. Romans 3:25 offers an example of this.<\/p><p><b>Long-suffering<\/b> is similar to forbearance in both meaning and application. However, the key difference is that long-suffering\u2014just as the word implies\u2014is not just exercised in the moment, but developed and displayed over a long course of many similar experiences.<\/p><p>According to Strong\u2019s and Thayer\u2019s definitions, the Greek word for long-suffering is <i>makrothumeo<\/i>, a compound of <i>makro <\/i>(meaning &#8220;long&#8221; in terms of time or space) and <i>thumeo<\/i> (meaning &#8220;wrath&#8221;). So, <i>makrothumeo<\/i> literally means to go a long time before exercising wrath. It suggests a restraint that is more enduring than simple forbearance.<\/p><p>In Romans 2:4, Paul writes:<\/p><blockquote><p>\u201cOr do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and long-suffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Here, God is described as both forbearing and long-suffering, and both qualities are said to come from the \u201criches of His goodness.\u201d<\/p><p>In God&#8217;s case, this does not imply a progression from forbearance to long-suffering. Rather, both attributes exist fully and perfectly within Him. While the words are sometimes used interchangeably in different Bible translations, there is a close connection between them\u2014and at times, they are almost inseparable.<\/p><h2><b>God Is the God of Patience<\/b><\/h2><p>Paul refers to God as \u201cthe God of patience\u201d in Romans 15:5\u2014not only because He is the author and source of patience, but because patience is essential to His very nature. So how does God reveal Himself as the God of patience?<\/p><h3><b>Patience in the Old Testament<\/b><\/h3><p>Many Old Testament passages reveal this aspect of God&#8217;s character, but three especially highlight His patience in connection with His grace, mercy, and goodness:<\/p><ul><li><b>Exodus 34:6<\/b> \u2013 \u201cThe Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abounding in goodness and truth.\u201d<\/li><li><b>Numbers 14:18<\/b> \u2013 \u201cThe Lord is long-suffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty\u2026\u201d<\/li><li><b>Psalm 86:15<\/b> \u2013 \u201cBut You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, long-suffering and abundant in mercy and truth.\u201d<\/li><\/ul><p>We also see this in <b>Nehemiah 9:17<\/b> and again in <b>Psalm 103:8<\/b>.<\/p><h3><b>The Patience of God with Sinful Humanity<\/b><\/h3><p>Paul was deeply aware of God\u2019s patience when he wrote:<\/p><blockquote><p>\u201cChrist Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all long-suffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.\u201d (1 Tim. 1:15\u201316)<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Peter reminds us of God\u2019s patience during Noah\u2019s time:<\/p><blockquote><p>\u201c\u2026the Divine long-suffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared\u2026\u201d 1 Pet. 3:20<\/p><\/blockquote><p>That was a period of <b>120 years<\/b>! Peter also speaks of God\u2019s current patience:<\/p><blockquote><p>\u201cThe Lord is not slack concerning His promise\u2026 but is long-suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.\u201d 2 Pet. 3:9<\/p><\/blockquote><p>If we look closely, to whom is this patience directed? The context (2 Pet. 3:1, 8\u20139) reveals that Peter is addressing \u201cthe beloved\u201d\u2014those who have \u201cobtained like precious faith\u201d (2 Pet. 1:1). This patience, then, is toward God\u2019s elect in the midst of a wicked world. He is waiting for all who will repent.<\/p><h3><b>The Patience of God with Israel<\/b><\/h3><p>There are many Old Testament examples of God&#8217;s patience with Israel, but two New Testament passages summarize it well:<\/p><ul><li><b>Acts 13:18<\/b> \u2013 \u201cNow for a time of about forty years He put up with their ways in the wilderness.\u201d<\/li><li><b>Romans 9:20\u201324<\/b> \u2013 These verses describe God&#8217;s long-suffering toward \u201cvessels of wrath\u201d and His mercy toward \u201cvessels of mercy.\u201d This includes both Jews and Gentiles, but especially reveals His patience with Israel.<\/li><\/ul><h3><b>The Patience of God Toward and Through His Servants<\/b><\/h3><p>Think of how patient God was with <b>Jonah<\/b>. Jonah even acknowledges it:<\/p><blockquote><p>\u201cAh, Lord\u2026 for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness\u2026\u201d Jonah 4:2<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Paul also exhorts Timothy\u2014and every preacher\u2014to:<\/p><blockquote><p>\u201cPreach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all long-suffering and teaching.\u201d 2 Timothy 4:2<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Sometimes we expect others\u2014new believers or fellow saints\u2014to mature quickly. But we forget just how long it took <b>us<\/b>to grow, and how patient God has been with <b>us<\/b>!<\/p><h2><b>The Fruit of Patience in the Life of the Believer<\/b><\/h2><p>We have all experienced the patience of God. Sometimes we even joke, \u201cBe patient with me\u2014God\u2019s not finished with me yet!\u201d But while we want others to be patient with us, we\u2019re not always willing to be patient with them.<\/p><p>However, if we are filled with the Holy Spirit, <b>patience<\/b> or <b>long-suffering<\/b> will be one of the fruits of that Spirit (Gal. 5:22). We are exhorted in Ephesians 4:2\u20133:<\/p><blockquote><p>\u201cWith all lowliness and gentleness, with long-suffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><p>If we are motivated by the love that God has poured into our hearts, then it should be displayed in our relationships. Two of the traits mentioned in the \u201clove chapter\u201d (1 Cor. 13) are: \u201clove is patient\u201d and \u201clove suffers long.\u201d<\/p><p>Paul knew how vital this was. In <b>Colossians 1:9\u201311<\/b>, he prays that believers would be strengthened for \u201call patience and long-suffering with joy.\u201d Later, in <b>Colossians 3:12\u201313<\/b>, he writes:<\/p><blockquote><p>\u201cTherefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, long-suffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another\u2026 even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><h2><b>A Final Challenge<\/b><\/h2><p>Maybe one reason we see so many broken homes, fractured assemblies, and strained relationships is that we\u2019ve lost sight of just how patient the <b>God of Patience<\/b> is. Maybe that\u2019s why we\u2019re so quick to discard or disregard one another.<\/p><p>May we view Him more and more as the God of Patience\u2014and may He help us to reflect that same patience toward one another.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-594 elementor-widget elementor-widget-template\" data-id=\"594\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"template.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-template\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"section\" data-elementor-id=\"576\" class=\"elementor elementor-576\" data-elementor-post-type=\"elementor_library\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-79606e36 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"79606e36\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3df53bd9\" data-id=\"3df53bd9\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-348dbc36
