“Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also, he made him a tunic of many colors. But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.”
Genesis 37:3-4
It has often been said that, as we read through the Bible, we learn that “Enoch shows the walk of faith, Noah shows the perseverance of faith, Abraham shows the obedience of faith, Isaac shows the power of faith, and Jacob shows the discipline of faith. Joseph shows the triumph of faith.”
Joseph is one of the most beautiful pictures of the Lord Jesus in all of Scripture. Both were loved by their fathers and hated by their brethren. God the Father delighted in the Son before His incarnation. In Proverbs 8:30, speaking prophetically of the Lord Jesus, we read, “I was beside Him as a master craftsman; and I was daily His delight.”
Just as Joseph was the object of his father’s affection, when the Lord Jesus became flesh and dwelt among us, the Father made known His delight in His Son by opening up the heavens and declaring, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). On the Mount of Transfiguration, He would again open the heavens and announce, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”
The Lord Jesus was ever in the bosom of the Father (John 1:18). There never was a time when He was not the Father’s delight. The Father loved the Son before the foundation of the world (John 17:24). The Father loved the Son during His walk here (John 5:20). The Father deeply loved the Son for the moral perfections He saw in the One who would lay down His life (John 10:17). The Father loves the Son and has committed all things into His hands (John 3:35).
Joseph’s life certainly displays a triumph of faith and the love that his father had for him, but nothing can compare to the love relationship between the Father and the Son.
Anchor For Today:
Father, how precious unto Thee Is Thy beloved Son,
In Whom Thou dost perfection see, Thy holy, blessed One.
He, preciousness itself to Thee, To us is precious too;
We every beauty in Him see, And Thine own glory view.
