God is sovereign. This means that He is the supreme Ruler of the universe and that He can do as He pleases. And because God is also righteous, whatever He pleases is perfect and always right. The Lord declares through the prophet Isaiah, “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure” (Is. 46:10). After Nebuchadnezzar was chastened by the Lord, he proclaimed, “He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?'” (Dan. 4:35). In Romans 9:20, Paul reminds us that we have no right to question God’s actions: “But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, ‘Why have you made me like this?'” The apostle also declares God to be the One “who works all things according to the counsel of His will” (Eph. 1:11).

The prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah both speak of God as the Master Potter (Is. 29:16; 45:9; 64:8; Jer. 18:6). If He is the Potter, and He is, then you and I are the clay! He has rights over us by creation and by redemption. We ought to submit ourselves to Him in every circumstance, never doubting His care, concern, and love for the vessel that He is forming. The truth of His sovereignty in my life allows Him to mold me as He sees fit, without my questioning His decisions.

The doctrine of His sovereignty also comforts us during those times when pressure is being applied, knowing that since He is the Supreme Ruler, He is working out His purposes, and they will reach their desired end. He has begun the work on His vessel and will complete it (Phil. 1:6). My responsibility is to be pliable in His hands.
