Il y avait un homme parmi les pharisiens, nomm\u00e9 Nicod\u00e8me, un chef des Juifs. Cet homme vint trouver J\u00e9sus de nuit et lui dit : \u201c Rabbi, nous savons que tu es un ma\u00eetre venu de Dieu ; car personne ne peut faire les signes que tu fais si Dieu n'est pas avec lui. \u201d

<\/em><\/p>

Nicod\u00e8me avait \u00e9t\u00e9 attir\u00e9 vers le Seigneur J\u00e9sus par les signes qu'il avait vus accomplir. Il figurait probablement parmi ceux mentionn\u00e9s \u00e0 la fin du chapitre deux\u00a0:
\u201c\u00a0Lorsqu\u2019il fut \u00e0 J\u00e9rusalem, \u00e0 l\u2019occasion de la P\u00e2que, pendant la f\u00eate, beaucoup crurent en son nom, \u00e0 cause des signes qu\u2019il accomplissait. Mais J\u00e9sus ne se pronon\u00e7a pas en leur faveur, parce qu\u2019il connaissait tous les hommes et qu\u2019il n\u2019avait pas besoin que quiconque rende t\u00e9moignage de l\u2019homme, car il savait ce qu\u2019il y avait dans l\u2019homme\u00a0\u201d (Jean 2, 23-25).<\/p>

On nous dit que Nicod\u00e8me \u00e9tait un pharisien, un gardien de la Loi, mais une autre description le concernant revient tout au long de l'\u00c9vangile de Jean\u00a0: il vint trouver J\u00e9sus de nuit. Ce d\u00e9tail est mentionn\u00e9 au moins trois fois (Jean 3,2\u00a0; 7,50\u00a0; 19,39). C'est pourquoi certains l'ont qualifi\u00e9 de disciple secret du Seigneur. Pourtant, apr\u00e8s la mort de J\u00e9sus, Nicod\u00e8me ne resta plus secret. Il s'afficha ouvertement aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de ceux qui d\u00e9fendaient le Christ crucifi\u00e9, mais ressuscit\u00e9.<\/p>

Dans notre passage, le Seigneur J\u00e9sus lui dit : \u201c En v\u00e9rit\u00e9, en v\u00e9rit\u00e9, je te le dis, si un homme ne na\u00eet de nouveau, il ne peut voir le royaume de Dieu \u201d (Jean 3.3). Cette affirmation laissa Nicod\u00e8me perplexe : \u201c Comment un homme peut-il na\u00eetre quand il est vieux ? Peut-il rentrer dans le sein de sa m\u00e8re et na\u00eetre une seconde fois ? \u201d (v. 4). J\u00e9sus r\u00e9pondit alors : \u201c En v\u00e9rit\u00e9, en v\u00e9rit\u00e9, je te le dis, si un homme ne na\u00eet d\u2019eau et d\u2019Esprit, il ne peut entrer dans le royaume de Dieu. Ce qui est n\u00e9 de la chair est chair, et ce qui est n\u00e9 de l\u2019Esprit est esprit. Ne t\u2019\u00e9tonne pas que je t\u2019aie dit : \u2018Il vous faut na\u00eetre de nouveau\u2019. Le vent souffle o\u00f9 il veut, et tu en entends le bruit, mais tu ne sais ni d\u2019o\u00f9 il vient ni o\u00f9 il va. Il en est de m\u00eame de tout homme qui est n\u00e9 de l\u2019Esprit \u201d (vv. 5-8).<\/p>

Ici, le Seigneur J\u00e9sus r\u00e9v\u00e8le comment chacun \u201c na\u00eet d\u2019en haut \u201d. Cette nouvelle naissance s\u2019op\u00e8re par l\u2019eau \u2013 qui repr\u00e9sente la Parole de Dieu (\u00c9ph\u00e9siens 5.26 ; 1 Pierre 1.23) \u2013 et par l\u2019Esprit de Dieu. Lors de sa rencontre avec le Christ, Nicod\u00e8me a appris que la nouvelle naissance est enti\u00e8rement l\u2019\u0153uvre de Dieu. Elle ne s\u2019acquiert pas par des efforts ext\u00e9rieurs, mais se re\u00e7oit par une naissance d\u2019en haut.<\/p>
