Hab\u00eda un hombre de los fariseos llamado Nicodemo, un principal entre los jud\u00edos. Este hombre fue a ver a Jes\u00fas de noche y le dijo: \u201cRab\u00ed, sabemos que eres un maestro que ha venido de Dios, porque nadie puede hacer las se\u00f1ales que t\u00fa haces si Dios no est\u00e1 con \u00e9l\u201d.\u201d

Nicodemo se hab\u00eda sentido atra\u00eddo por el Se\u00f1or Jes\u00fas gracias a las se\u00f1ales que le ve\u00eda realizar. Probablemente se encontraba entre los mencionados al final del cap\u00edtulo dos:
\u201cEstando Jes\u00fas en Jerusal\u00e9n durante la Pascua, en plena fiesta, muchos creyeron en su nombre al ver las se\u00f1ales que hac\u00eda. Pero Jes\u00fas no se comprometi\u00f3 con ellos, porque los conoc\u00eda a todos y no ten\u00eda necesidad de que nadie diera testimonio de los hombres, pues sab\u00eda lo que hab\u00eda en el coraz\u00f3n del hombre\u201d (Juan 2:23-25).<\/p>

Se nos dice que Nicodemo era fariseo \u2014uno de los guardianes de la Ley\u2014, pero hay otra descripci\u00f3n que lo acompa\u00f1a a lo largo del Evangelio de Juan: que fue a ver a Jes\u00fas de noche. Este detalle se menciona al menos tres veces (Juan 3:2; 7:50; 19:39). Por ello, algunos lo han llamado disc\u00edpulo secreto del Se\u00f1or. Sin embargo, tras la muerte de Jes\u00fas, Nicodemo dej\u00f3 de ser un disc\u00edpulo secreto. Se identific\u00f3 abiertamente con aquellos que defend\u00edan a Cristo crucificado \u2014pero resucitado\u2014.<\/p>

En este pasaje, el Se\u00f1or Jes\u00fas le dice: \u201cDe cierto, de cierto te digo, que el que no nace de nuevo, no puede ver el reino de Dios\u201d (Juan 3:3). Esta afirmaci\u00f3n desconcert\u00f3 a Nicodemo: \u201c\u00bfC\u00f3mo puede un hombre nacer siendo viejo? \u00bfAcaso puede entrar por segunda vez en el vientre de su madre y nacer?\u201d (v. 4). Entonces Jes\u00fas respondi\u00f3: \u201cDe cierto, de cierto te digo, que el que no nace de agua y del Esp\u00edritu, no puede entrar en el reino de Dios. Lo que nace de la carne, carne es; y lo que nace del Esp\u00edritu, esp\u00edritu es. No te maravilles de que te haya dicho: \u2018Es necesario nacer de nuevo\u2019. El viento sopla donde quiere, y oyes su sonido, pero no sabes de d\u00f3nde viene ni a d\u00f3nde va. As\u00ed es todo aquel que nace del Esp\u00edritu\u201d (vv. 5-8).<\/p>

Aqu\u00ed, el Se\u00f1or Jes\u00fas revela c\u00f3mo todos nacemos de nuevo. Este nuevo nacimiento se produce a trav\u00e9s del agua \u2014que representa la Palabra de Dios (Efesios 5:26; 1 Pedro 1:23)\u2014 y mediante el Esp\u00edritu de Dios. En su encuentro con Cristo, Nicodemo aprendi\u00f3 que el nuevo nacimiento es enteramente obra de Dios. No se logra mediante obras externas, sino que se recibe a trav\u00e9s de un nuevo nacimiento.<\/p>
