Es gab einen Mann namens Nikodemus, einen Pharis\u00e4er und einen angesehenen Mann unter den Juden. Dieser kam nachts zu Jesus und sagte zu ihm: \u201cRabbi, wir wissen, dass du ein Lehrer bist, der von Gott gekommen ist; denn niemand kann diese Zeichen tun, die du tust, es sei denn, Gott ist mit ihm.\u201d

Nikodemus war durch die Zeichen, die er Jesus vollbringen sah, zu ihm hingezogen worden. Wahrscheinlich geh\u00f6rte er zu denjenigen, die am Ende des zweiten Kapitels erw\u00e4hnt wurden:
\u201cAls er nun zur Passahfeier in Jerusalem war, glaubten viele an seinen Namen, als sie die Zeichen sahen, die er tat. Jesus aber vertraute sich ihnen nicht an, weil er alle Menschen kannte und es nicht n\u00f6tig hatte, dass jemand \u00fcber einen Menschen Zeugnis ablegte, denn er wusste, was im Menschen war\u201d (Johannes 2,23\u201325).<\/p>

Nikodemus wird als Pharis\u00e4er \u2013 einer der H\u00fcter des Gesetzes \u2013 beschrieben, doch im Johannesevangelium findet sich eine weitere Beschreibung: Er kam nachts zu Jesus. Dieses Detail wird mindestens dreimal erw\u00e4hnt (Johannes 3,2; 7,50; 19,39). Deshalb wurde er von manchen als heimlicher J\u00fcnger des Herrn bezeichnet. Nach Jesu Tod blieb Nikodemus jedoch nicht l\u00e4nger im Verborgenen. Er bekannte sich offen zu denen, die f\u00fcr den gekreuzigten \u2013 aber auferstandenen \u2013 Christus einstanden.<\/p>

In unserer Lesung sagt der Herr Jesus zu ihm: \u201cWahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage dir: Wer nicht von neuem geboren wird, kann das Reich Gottes nicht sehen\u201d (Johannes 3,3). Diese Aussage verwirrte Nikodemus: \u201cWie kann ein Mensch geboren werden, wenn er alt ist? Kann er etwa in den Mutterleib zur\u00fcckkehren und ein zweites Mal geboren werden?\u201d (V. 4). Jesus antwortete ihm: \u201cWahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage dir: Wer nicht aus Wasser und Geist geboren wird, kann nicht in das Reich Gottes kommen. Was vom Fleisch geboren ist, ist Fleisch, und was vom Geist geboren ist, ist Geist. Wundere dich nicht, dass ich dir gesagt habe: Ihr m\u00fcsst von neuem geboren werden. Der Wind weht, wo er will, und du h\u00f6rst sein Sausen, aber du wei\u00dft nicht, woher er kommt und wohin er geht. So ist es mit jedem, der aus dem Geist geboren ist\u2018 (V. 5\u20138).<\/p>

Hier offenbart der Herr Jesus, wie jeder Mensch \u201cvon oben geboren\u201d wird. Diese Wiedergeburt geschieht durch das Wasser \u2013 das das Wort Gottes symbolisiert (Epheser 5,26; 1. Petrus 1,23) \u2013 und durch den Heiligen Geist. In seiner Begegnung mit Christus erkannte Nikodemus, dass die Wiedergeburt allein Gottes Werk ist. Sie wird nicht durch \u00e4u\u00dfere Leistung erreicht, sondern durch die Geburt von oben empfangen.<\/p>
