For indeed he was sick almost unto death; but God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"546\" data-end=\"549\" \/><strong>Philippians 2:25\u201327<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"601\" data-end=\"1155\">Epaphroditus had been sent by the assembly in Philippi to deliver a gift of love to the apostle Paul. Along the way, he became gravely ill\u2014<em data-start=\"740\" data-end=\"760\">\u201csick unto death.\u201d<\/em> Once he recovered enough to travel, Paul sent him back to the believers at Philippi so they could be comforted by seeing him again (v. 28). Paul instructed them: <em data-start=\"923\" data-end=\"1140\">\u201cReceive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness, and hold such men in esteem; because for the work of Christ he came close to death, not regarding his life, to supply what was lacking in your service toward me\u201d<\/em> (vv. 29\u201330).<\/p><p data-start=\"1157\" data-end=\"1205\">This short passage teaches us several lessons:<\/p><p data-start=\"1207\" data-end=\"1538\"><strong data-start=\"1207\" data-end=\"1264\">1. Serving the Lord doesn\u2019t exempt us from suffering.<\/strong><br data-start=\"1264\" data-end=\"1267\" \/>Some might look at Epaphroditus\u2019s mission as less than successful\u2014perhaps even a failure. But that is not the case. The difference-maker is found in those beautiful words: <em data-start=\"1439\" data-end=\"1451\">\u201cBut God.\u201d<\/em> Paul could say, <em data-start=\"1468\" data-end=\"1490\">\u201cBut God had mercy.\u201d<\/em> God was not only in control\u2014He was in charge.<\/p><p data-start=\"1540\" data-end=\"1728\"><strong data-start=\"1540\" data-end=\"1607\">2. What looks like failure can be part of God\u2019s growth process.<\/strong><br data-start=\"1607\" data-end=\"1610\" \/>If life were only mountaintop experiences, we would never discover the spiritual growth that happens in the valleys.<\/p><p data-start=\"1730\" data-end=\"1986\"><strong data-start=\"1730\" data-end=\"1782\">3. We see the value of community life in Christ.<\/strong><br data-start=\"1782\" data-end=\"1785\" \/>Paul declared: <em data-start=\"1800\" data-end=\"1904\">\u201cBut God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.\u201d <\/em>Epaphroditus\u2019s return brought joy not just to Paul, but it would bring joy to the entire assembly.<\/p><p data-start=\"1988\" data-end=\"2302\"><strong data-start=\"1988\" data-end=\"2023\">4. God sees what others do not.<\/strong><br data-start=\"2023\" data-end=\"2026\" \/>Most of us would never have known these lessons from Epaphroditus\u2019s life without the <em data-start=\"2111\" data-end=\"2123\">\u201cBut God.\u201d<\/em> Much of life is hidden from public view. Much of what we do for Christ may never be recorded in human history. But God sees. He knows. And He honors what is done for His glory.<\/p><p data-start=\"2304\" data-end=\"2401\"><strong>Anchor For Today:<\/strong><br \/>No circumstance of life is beyond the reach of God&#8217;s mercy.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>God Had Mercy On Him \u201cYet I considered it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, and fellow soldier, but your messenger and the one who ministered to my need; since he was longing for you all, and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick.
