“The Lord God has given Me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning; He awakens My ear to hear as the learned. The Lord God has opened My ear, and I was not rebellious, nor did I turn away.”
Isaiah 50:4–5
These verses, along with those that follow, speak of our blessed Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, as the perfect Servant. Verse 6 goes on to describe some of the suffering and shame He endured at the hands of His enemies, and verse 7 reveals the dedication and determination He displayed as He faced the cross. As we read in Gospel of Luke 9:51, “He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem.”
They also give us insight into our Lord’s personal devotion to the Father. His Father awakened Him each morning, opened His ear, and taught Him as the dependent Man and Servant. What a wonderful way to begin each day.
Christ began His day by opening His ear to God’s voice. He was fed by the Word and led by the Word. What He spoke, He had first heard: “I speak to the world those things I have heard from Him” (John 8:26). An effective witness is one who first knows how to hear.
Because the Lord Jesus gave His ear to the Father, it was not difficult for Him to give His back to those who struck Him or His face to those who mocked Him. “The Lord God will help Me” (Isaiah 50:7). This was His confidence, and He was not disappointed. He set His face like a flint and could say, “I have finished the work which You have given Me to do” (John 17:4).
