If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
John 8:31-32
In John 8, the Lord Jesus said, “you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” The truth makes us free! Many of us have experienced that freedom through the Word of God. But notice what verse 36 adds: “Therefore if the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed.” We are freed by the truth—by what God’s Word says about us—not by the lies the enemy plants in our minds.
Our identity is defined by truth, not by our past failures. Romans 6 reminds us that we have died with Christ and now share a new identity in Him. In Romans 7, we see the struggle of the believer, but in Romans 8, we discover new power to live victoriously. The chains can be broken!
What is the difference in John 8 between verse 32 and verse 36? One says the truth makes you free; the other says the Son sets you free. It is possible to be declared free yet not live as one who is truly set free. Imagine a man serving a life sentence who receives a pardon. He is legally free, but if he never walks out of the prison, he will not experience the joy of freedom. Someone must lead him out.
The Lord Jesus is the One who takes us by the hand and leads us out of the prison. The chains that once held us captive are broken. If the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed! He is the Chain Breaker. It is His power that shatters the shackles and delivers us into true liberty.
